Our tent did have a pet monkey for a while. It proved to be a dirty animal in captivity. It was also "unfriendly", due to the fact that many of these simians were plucked from the wild in a brutal manner. |
1 Mar 45 - Runner just came in and said my ship is ready. See ya later. 2 Mar 45 - No. 11 - to Kunming-10:30-Pilot Weisbruch, Copilot Lawrence Goefft 3 Mar 45 - I had to leave you in a hurry the last letter but you know I can't give up flights, for each one I make may get me home sooner. When I got back I had six letters waiting for me and it sure does wonders even when you're almost too tired to read. Time for bed, 10:30, so I better hit it. May go flying early, can never tell. Two games of checkers, saw one newsreel, ate pretzels, drank water, a little talk with Weezie and a letter to you. Pretty exciting Saturday nite, eh? Well, things are rough all over. 5 Mar 45 - No. 12- to Luliang-10:45-Pilot William H. Munn, Copilot Weisbruch 7 Mar 45 - After the show, my pilot and old copilot (Stan Weisbruch and Darryl C.Boyd) came over to our tent and Berky got some bread and made salmon sandwiches. He got four boxes from home in two days, a very marvelous record. Weezie had brought over a big 30 oz. can of orange and grapefruit juice so we had a nice snack.--- Having a dog put off a plane wouldn't bother me in the least. I saw a Nazi colonel and his aide, a corporal, get better sleeping conditions than I. I therefore have a very low opinion of my countryman who was responsible for this situation. 8 Mar 45 - No. 13- ‡ to Barrackpore, India, in a C-47 Dakota-2:20 hours-Pilot Weisbruch, Copilot Sheldon C. Robson 8/9 Mar 45 - No. 14- to Bhamo, Burma-3:50-Pilot Weisbruch-Turned back at Bhamo due to oxygen leak 9 Mar 45 - Berky selling me his camera for $53. 13 Mar 45 - No. 15- ‡ to Barrackpore-2:15-Pilot Weisbruch, Copilot Robson 14 Mar 45 - First photos---Payne and Baker in Assam---described a mongoose 15/16 Mar 45 - No. 16- to Luliang-9:35-Pilot Weisbruch, Copilot Capt. F. Fred Robinson---Thunderstorm just south of Kunming---R.O.N. at Kunming 17 Mar 45 - This evening, our monkey being rather soiled, I took her to the water pool across the paddy. I tossed her out in it three times and each time she swam in like an expert, kept her head up and her tail down like a dog. Last night when Taylor (new tentmate) crawled into his sack, he found a runaway monk at his feet. Berky went over and got the monk and proceeded to tie him up for the night. The monk must not have liked the idea because he jumped on Berky's lap and neatly and thoroughly wet his pants. Our bearer provides us with many amusing episodes. He teaches us his language, then when we fire it back at him, he laughs and says "You are well up on Bengali." As an example of how shrewd he is, I'll tell you how he worked Taylor's laundry yesterday. The laundry charges one rupee and four annas for 25 pieces. Any amount over that costs double, or 2 rupees 8 annas. Taylor sent 31 pieces. Our bearer picked out six handkerchiefs, washed and pressed them himself as good as the laundry, and kept 1 rupee, 4 annas for himself.---Enclosed are Chinese bills. 19 Mar 45 - The chaplain wasn't interrupted by a crying baby, but that bawling monkey sure was distracting. 19/20 Mar 45 - No. 17- to Chengkung-10:00-Pilot Weisbruch---R.O.N.-Took juice, etc. to Cooley-left it but didn't see him. 21 Mar 45 - Bearer bought me a ukelele in town with my money. Left stuff for Cooley in China. Got Mom a silk hanky in China. Attended retreat. 24 MAr 45 - [First mention of buddy, Conrad "Connie" Gigstead] As I look outside I can see the trees and tents fairly clearly under the moon's light. It is almost full and you can walk anywhere without need of a flashlight. I have a can of blended orange and grapefruit juice and a box of butter cookies to keep me company. The bulb isn't putting out much candlepower. I could light a couple candles but then I would have to put down the tent flaps preventing the cool breeze from blowing them out. So I settle for a bad light and a cool breeze. Also adding a little atmosphere is my trusty pipe burning 'alf and 'alf as the English say. 30 Mar 45 - Got to Palm Sunday service. A couple nights ago we had a visitor to our tent in the middle of the night. Just a wildcat! He left after an hour and did no appreciable damage. Most of the time our nocturnal guests are mosquitoes and an occasional hyena. 30/31 Mar 45 - No. 18- - A turn around due to inoperative compasses-2:10-Pilot Weisbruch, Copilot Victorino |
